Costa Maya, Mexico
It was 8:00 in the morning when I heard an announcement that the ship had arrived at Costa Maya, Mexico. The day ahead held so many activities, and I was well-rested and ready! I headed to The Local (on board the Norwegian Joy) for breakfast, and I ordered some delicious pancakes!

As soon as I got off the ship, there was a dock that passengers had to walk along to get to the ‘happening’ area of the pier. It was an incredibly scenic walk of the ocean and the sun shining brightly on Mexico.
Once we finished walking on the dock, we were greeted by hundreds of local stores and restaurants, and they were the perfect places to spend some time. I noticed the many colors in a lot of the pieces being sold, and the artwork was incredible. There were so many jewelry items, clothes, and even shoes for sale- all handcrafted in Mexico.
We attended a show to watch native people perform a ritual to their gods. The ritual was spectacular since it involved them risking their life and climbing up a pole in the scorching sun- with no safety net! I was on the edge of my seat watching the ritual the entire time, and I definitely gained respect for different traditions and learned a lot about Mexican culture.
Swimming with the dolphins is a must-do- at least once in a lifetime! First of all, the dolphins are simply adorable, and what’s better than getting to swim with something adorable? The water was so refreshing on the hot day, and the dolphins were just an added bonus. The tour guides also teach a lot about the preservation of dolphins and the harm they’re receiving because of pollution. I’d definitely recommend swimming with dolphins if you ever get the chance.

Next up was an authentic Mayan Wellness Retreat. To say I was excited wouldn’t cover the relaxation I was looking forward to. We were taken through a 6-step process simulating a Mayan “Spa Day”, and it was magnificent to say the least. The steps included an herb bath, a sauna-type room where we listened to Mayan prayers, a cold shower, face and body masks, a warm bath and massage, and a hammock massage. I would definitely say I felt awoken after the whole experience, and my stress levels were in the negatives. It was a wonderful experience, and anyone who finds themself in Costa Maya should relax like the Mayans!
Coconut once again! We had to buy another coconut on the hot day as a way to cool off and get a tasty snack. Drinking out of the Mexican coconut was too much fun, and the coconut jelly was insanely good. Boy am I going to buy coconuts when we get home! (Though I doubt they’ll be as good).
Just as I didn’t think the day could get better, we spotted some flamingos, and I was mesmerized. The pink birds are like no other, and I enjoyed taking many, many pictures with them. With the sunlight bouncing off of them, they were gorgeous.

Dinner was back on the ship: Loaded Nachos and some cheesecake (I’d like to think I’m eating healthy on this vacation!) Another day in the books! Can’t wait to see what Cozumel, Mexico has to offer!
